Youth Financial Literacy

Financial habits are formed when youth are young. The development of these habits has impact not only on the youth’s future finances, but also self-esteem, relationships, and overall enjoyment of life when he or she matures into adulthood.

 

This seminar will provide the youth with an introduction to financial literacy and wellness. It specifically aims to provide the youth with the knowledge of financial concepts such as saving, investing, spending and borrowing.

Charm Clinic Leadership & Mentoring Academy

The Charm Clinic Leadership Mentoring Academy will host a four day workshop during the summer that will provide instruction to equip students with leadership, career goals, cultural enrichment, financial literacy, etiquette, physical fitness, hygiene, teamwork, proper dress and appearance training.

Education/Reading is Fundamental (RIF)

The Education/Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) Committee is a partnership with the National RIF organization; Cherokee Park, E. B. Williams Stoner Hill, J.S. Clark, Midway, Oak Park, Queensborough,  Westwood and Werner Park Elementary Schools.  The RIF project provides books for ownership and a multiplicity of motivational and challenging literacy experiences and activities to over 1500 students in grades Pre-K through 6th through book distributions, RIF Read In Days and Essay and Spelling Bee. The Community Reading Challenge has had outstanding participation from Shreve Memorial Library and CCAA Head Start Centers. The Volunteer Literacy Corps exposes students to business/professional leaders, public officials, and retired educators who love to read and support local community schools. RIF helps to promote reading for “fun and joy” that ultimately leads them to lifelong reading.

Shoe Bank

The Shoe Bank Committee will oversee the application process to distribute shoes to children of low income families and children experiencing hardships.  Children of Caddo, Bossier and Desoto parishes benefit from these services.  The committee will closely monitor the completion of each application.  Funds will be awarded each year as reflected in the Community Outreach Budget.  

Scholarships/Senior Activities

The Scholarship/Senior Activities Committee will oversee the scholarship application process.  The procedures for ranking scholarship applications will be followed based on the scholarship procedures manual.  Scholarships will be awarded each year as reflected in the Community Outreach Budget.  The committee will select the winners and three alternates by March of each year.  In the event a scholarship is not awarded as stipulated, it shall be awarded to the alternates.  Any changes in the scholarship procedures must be approved by the body.

A Senior Recognition program will celebrate the scholarship recipients and recognize accomplished seniors.  The event should be in March or April.

AKA Connection

The AKA Connection Committee shall provide a forum or mechanism to transmit information and to mobilize the membership in order to positively influence decisions relative to political, social, health, educational and economic issues from a global perspective.  The committee will plan activities to register voters, provide information relating to political issues and facilitate the membership to attend AKA Day at the Capitol. 

Building Our Economic Legacy

The Economic Development Committee will provide practical but advanced financial planning information that will increase fiscal awareness and lead to increased savings and asset accumulation in the African-American community.  

1. During April, Financial Literacy month, the committee will plan and conduct workshop(s) and forum(s) in partnership with financial institutions and investment firm experts, which will assist community residents in reviewing their current financial situations, developing personal financial plans and becoming more knowledgeable regarding practices that lead to intergenerational wealth.

2. The committee will coordinate with consumer credit experts to conduct workshops that are focused on obtaining and understanding credit reports, repairing credit and improving credit scores.  

3. The committee will encourage members to support African-American businesses and promote African American entrepreneurs.  Encourage members to track the dollars spent with Black businesses and submit this information on a monthly basis.  The committee can work with existing efforts to update Black-owned businesses directory.

Education/HBCU

The Education HBCU for Life Committee will sponsor and support activities designed to showcase the historic significance and current relevance and viability of HBCUs.  Examples activities include, but are not limited to:  HBCU college fairs, college tours (including virtual tours), and adopt an HBCU in our region.  The committee will also engage in activities designed to raise funds and provide financial support for HBCUs.
