Our Signature Programs

Education/EAF

The Education/Educational Advancement Foundation (EAF) Committee will be chaired by the EAF Captain.  The committee will raise funds that will be donated to EAF.

Health

The Health Committee will promote awareness and support for health related issues.  The committee will be responsible for all Woman’s Health and Wellness activities by engaging in community outreach and educational activities. 

  1. The chapter will coordinate awareness activities with local community partners to implement early detection screenings to individuals in various locations.  The activities will be designed to increase breast cancer awareness, and facilitate linkages between African –American women and affordable screening and treatment programs.  The chapter will observe Breast Cancer Awareness Day/Month in October involving healthcare professionals with expertise in breast cancer.

  2. The committee will engage in activities that will raise awareness of the risk factors associated with heart health, and will present effective intervention and prevention practices to reduce those factors with an emphasis on low-impact exercises such as walking 20 – 30 minutes a day.  Example activities include, but are not limited to: create a walking works club, walk the recommended 8,000 steps per day, observe Pink Goes Red for a Day in February, host community health fair and collaborate with the American Red Cross and similar organizations to sponsor CPR training classes for chapter members and community participants.

  3. Chapters will engage in projects that emphasize nutrition for life including establishing community gardens, and encouraging communities to engage in making healthy food choices as well as nutritionally rich food development.  The committee can utilize workshops, media, newsletters and other outreach strategies to share information regarding healthy eating, proper food preparation and community resources; consider serving only healthy food options at chapter sponsored events; host a group or conduct activities that focus on healthy eating such as shopping healthy by reading package labels and engaging in healthy cooking; sponsor a chapter or community garden in partnership with local community members; incentivize chapter sorors to plant personal gardens and coordinate with local food banks to provide healthier food choices by hosting a healthy food drive.

  4. The committee will raise national awareness regarding the impact of caregiver syndrome on the quality of health of caregivers, especially African-American women, and to increase awareness of resources and support available to caregivers.  Chapters can partner with local organizations and provide workshops and community event(s) that will educate the community and elevate the issue of caregiver syndrome.  The committee can provide resources to caregivers regarding practicing preventive healthcare and self-care behaviors to minimize the vulnerabilities and risks associated with the stress of caregiving.  Example activities include, but are not limited to: host community event for gaining information regarding resources available to lighten the load of caregivers, host a panel to educate members on the signs of caregiver fatigue and its effects and engage a roundtable discussion regarding practical ways to assist caregivers.

Leadership Development

The Leadership Committee is responsible for planning a yearly chapter retreat in August.  The half or full day retreat program should offer workshops and team-building opportunities to prepare for future leadership roles in the chapter and sorority-member enrichment.  Joint Leadership retreats can be planned with undergraduate chapter(s).  The delivery of the Chapter Leadership Program can be used to set standards and qualifications to run for chapter office and appointments for chairmanship.  The annual chapter retreat is designed to engage chapter members and roll out training however, the chapter leadership program should offer opportunities through the year for development.  Example activities include, but are not limited to: brown bag lunch series, webinars, leadership moments in chapter meetings and partnership with local community and civic training series.

Mentoring

The Mentoring Committee makes sure that each new initiate, newly reactivated and transfer sorors are assigned a mentor.  The mentor and mentee will be asked to sign a two year commitment agreement.  Activities will be planned for mentors and mentees to meet and maintain a relationship.

Music

The Music Committee shall be responsible for the music for all chapter programs and rituals

Sisterly Relations

The Sisterly Relations Committee functions as a stand-alone committee, independent of the Membership and Mentoring committee.  However, the committee will occasionally collaborate on some events. The committee will plan monthly activities to encourage all members to model the behavior of integrity, civility, respect and care at the chapter level.  Activities will foster and support the core values established in our sisterly relations program and Soror Code of Ethics.

Other Community Service Programs

Items are collected to help construct pillowcase dresses.  

Both shoes and eyeglass items are collected.  Outreach will be done for refugees in Shreveport.
